Neuronal efficiency

The question of whether people with higher cognitive performance also use their brain more efficiently is not only being investigated in relation to intelligence, but also in relation to programming or sports expertise.

Research focus

Neuronal efficiency describes the brain's ability to process information with minimal energy expenditure. Neuronal efficiency was initially investigated in the field of intelligence research. In our research group, we have investigated neuronal efficiency in the context of computational thinking, which is considered to be particularly high in people with good programming skills. But research into neuronal efficiency has also provided fascinating insights into the brains of top athletes in relation to sport. Scientific research often shows that athletes, especially experts in their respective sports, exhibit different patterns of brain activity compared to amateurs when performing sport-related tasks or making decisions. This does not necessarily mean that the brains of elite athletes are less active, but that they work more efficiently.
